I will spare you the lengthy speech on all those things. But I am extremely appreciative of all the support.

We have some proper Album Of The Year entries now!

Hymns From The Hills by Poison Ruïn came out in early April, and it’s great. Sometimes it’s Motörhead, sometimes it’s Social Distortion, sometimes it’s a little like the Appleseed Cast. Numerous great tracks. We’ll go with Serpent’s Curse here - which even sounds a little Dropkick Murphy with the intro. If you like it, check out the rest.

Not to name drop, but my bud Sam (bassist of TUI) posted about WIRED by Basement. Never heard of them before. I spun it and it’s on the list. The albums first three songs are STRONG. It’s very early-90’s Bush (the band, not president). The gang vocals on Deadweight are probably my favorite moment of the year - of any record.

Oh, mama. Your boy is a Fantano-coded, hipster, millennial, harsh noise enjoyer, and I can’t help it. That being said, you fuckin’ KNOW I love that new Lip Critic record Theft World. Equal parts Death Grips, the B-52s, and Kneecap, it’s the kind of lunacy that I’ve been missing.

More like maximalism than lunacy. Jackpot is THE Song Of The Year so far. The first half is so fucking groovy, compressed, and head-bobbing. The beat kick in after he screams “JACKPOT!” makes me wanna go crazy. Then it transforms into this spacey, open, detached outtro - pure Death Grips.

Whatcha Readin?

If you couldn’t gather, the last two months have been very busy. My reading became a slow crawl.

I read Invisible Cities - which was pitched to me as an absolute classic. I gotta admit, it didn’t do much for me and I struggled to get through its very short length.

Then I hopped into The Colorado Kid by Stephen King. This was another really short novel, but quite enjoyable. Sort of an open-ended mystery, that has quite a bit of Maine slice of life.

Maybe I’m an idiot, but I wouldn’t call this a whodunnit … because the book cheekily doesn’t offer any closure. We never find out who done it.

And now, I’m back on the Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin (# Ursula K. Le Guin Summer tbh). Reading the fourth book of her Earthsea series, Tehanu.

She is such an absolutely effortless writer. I find her exact style of writing beautiful. Big shout out if you want something both resonant, frictionless, and thoughtful.

Honestly, I might go right into Lathe of Heaven after this.

Spring Market Breakdown

Since the last newsletter, FOG was at three events. I can’t even begin to express the gratitude I feel. I will do a very quick rundown of the events, because they deserve it.

First – what feels like forever ago – was the Baltimore Tattoo Arts Festival. That was a three day gauntlet where I met so many great people. As always, the convention was good to me and I will be back next year with the crew.

A special shout out to Liza of Wazil, my boothmate extraordinaire. It was great to spend time and she is an absolute rockstar. We are hungry for next year!

Directly after that was the spring market at Blackcollar Screenprinting. This event was more low-key, but it’s really nice to see all the vendors and locals up there. Baltimore always treats me so well, so I hope to get up there in the future again.

And last was the weekend-long Plant Day at Plants Alive! in Silver Spring.

This was a crazy weekend! I vended alongside Hannah of Glassyussy, and we shared a 10-foot tent. This would not have been a problem, except for the fact it was torrentially raining all of Saturday.

Cars were getting stuck, our tent sprung a small leak or two, and we couldn’t even display our stuff to the edges of the tent because rain was coming in sideways. The market was super busy though! Like, very, very busy.

Luckily, the next day was beautiful. We took our tent walls down and expanded our footprint well beyond the space they allowed us. This was a great event and I would love to do it again.

It was an absolute breakneck few weeks. I gave myself no time to breathe. Thank you to everyone who came out and visited me at one of these events. Seriously. It means the world.

OH, GOD, THE ITALIANS!

I also managed to get out of the country! So, amidst all the market craziness, I spent eight days in Italy.

After an extremely long day of travel – one eight-hour flight, two trains, and one miniature metro - we made it to Perugia. It was absolutely beautiful and ancient. The streets are mazes of archways. Each stacked on top of each other for hundreds of years.

While Perugia isn’t a tourist hub, we had a reason to be there. I was fortunate enough to link up with fellow banner maker, Itziar.

Her and her husband Paulo showed us extreme hospitality - considering we were practically strangers. It felt very special to be invited into their world as they whisked us around the region for two days

I cannot stress how thankful I am for the experiences they gave us. Life can be so special and funny sometimes. Honestly, the two days with them were the highlight of the trip.

Afterwards, we headed into Rome for the remainder. It is a colossal, historically-dense, jam-packed city. Of course, we hit all the sites from antiquity, ate the four pastas (and everything else), and did our best to not look like Americans.

Even being a catholic dropout, the Vatican Museum and Basilica of Saint Peter were undeniable high points. The Basilica was perhaps the most incredible structure I’ve ever seen. One of the few times I found absolutely no reason to try to capture it with a camera.

Honestly, Rome was amazing. It only made me more excited for the provincial cities that we didn’t get to. Rome’s a giant museum. And to visit it your first time and not see all the sites feels like a disservice.
